If you’ve ever visited Wetzlar, Germany, specifically Leitz Park, you’ll know that our favorite photographic tools, including Leica M, Leica Q, and Leica SL, are produced there. This spring, a few of us from Camera West and Leica Store San Francisco had the unique opportunity to visit Leica Camera’s headquarters at Leitz Park. This was my first visit, and the experience was unparalleled. However, our visit was brief and with a singular purpose – to get a firsthand look at the new Leica SL3, the latest evolution of the Leica SL system.

In the video, I explore the SL3’s enhancements over its predecessor, the Leica SL2 and speak with Stefan Rou, the product manager for the entire SL system, where we address some high-level questions about the Leica SL3, such as its sensor, size and form factor, performance in different situations, and much more!

As many of you know, I’m a SL user myself, with the Leica SL2-S being my primary camera for filming our episodes for Camera West TV. This didn’t change during our visit to Leitz Park; everything we filmed was captured on our reliable SL2-S with a variety of Leica L mount optics. However, after using the Leica SL3, we’re excited to transition to using that camera for our videos!

In the coming days, we look forward to sharing more about the Leica SL3 on the Tools of Time blog. Meanwhile, we invite you to explore the full-resolution JPEG images from the video, which I took while testing the camera in Wetzlar. Also, you can read our in-depth article introducing the Leica SL3 and its new additions by Ben Carpenter.
