Jim Marshall: The Beatles – Gallery Reception
On Thursday, September 3, we were thrilled to host the opening reception of Jim Marshall: The Beatles at Leica Store San Francisco. This marked the third time we have presented Jim Marshall’s work at the gallery, and it was a particularly meaningful occasion.
The exhibition is especially significant as the first public presentation of Jim Marshall’s original gelatin silver working prints, offering a rare and intimate look at his photographic process and his relationship with the subjects he documented.
2026 marks what would have been Jim Marshall’s 90th birthday, as well as the 60th anniversary of The Beatles’ last scheduled concert, held at Candlestick Park here in San Francisco in 1966.
As the only photographer granted backstage access that evening, Marshall was able to photograph The Beatles beyond the stage and away from the crowds. His photographs capture not only the anticipation and energy surrounding the concert, but also quieter moments of the four musicians preparing, waiting, joking, and sharing fleeting moments away from the roar of the audience.
Sixty years later, these photographs remain a powerful record of a band at a pivotal moment in history. More than documentation of a historic concert, they preserve the atmosphere, personalities, and intimate moments surrounding The Beatles’ final scheduled live performance. Through Marshall’s camera, a legendary chapter in music history becomes remarkably immediate, personal, and enduring.
