Candido is a London based color negative film manufacturer that specialized in 3 unique film stocks while keeping the cost low! These film stocks include: Candido 200, Candido 400, and Candido 800. What makes these film stocks stand out is their distinct character and halation the highlights, a characteristic unique to 35mm movie film with the remjet layer removed.
Candido 200
According to our friends at Candido, Candido 200 Color Film is designed to be your trusted ally that beautifully handles bright sunsets, early sunrises, and vibrant ocean landscapes, allowing you to preserve your jaw-dropping memories in all their glory. This film strikes the perfect balance between fine grain and intense colors, making it an excellent choice for a diverse range of photography styles.
Unfortunately, we were experiencing not so sunny weather at the time of testing this film stock. Instead, I decided to test how well this film performs in low-light and indoor settings. What sets this ISO 200 film stock apart is that it is Tungsten balanced, which is rare to see in a low speed film stock other than 35mm movie film. The grain was exceptionally fine, has great contrast, and vivid color! I really enjoyed how this film performed in these lighting conditions.
Candido 400
The Candido 400 emulsion is the most suitable stock for all types of light and events. With its slightly higher ISO, Candido 400 excels in low-light conditions. No matter the setting, indoors or outdoors, this film ensures your shots retain their natural charm while adding a delightful grainy touch that film enthusiasts adore.
I found Candido 400 to be the most versatile out of the 3 film stocks. It handles most lighting situations both day, night, and indoor exceptionally well. It is truly a well balanced film stock that delivers a nice punch to warmer colors, has great contrast, and fine grain. This film also demonstrates the signature halation in certain lighting situations that add a bit of flair to each scene.
Candido 800
Candido’s ISO 800 Color Film, specially designed to excel in low-light conditions and fast-paced environments. Whether you’re shooting under the stars, in dimly-lit rooms, or capturing action-packed scenes, this high-speed film delivers exceptional results.
I originally shot the ISO 800 roll right after I finished the Candido 200 roll to compare how each tungsten balanced film handled in similar indoor lighting conditions. Overall they have a similar color palette and look with a bit more prominent grain. This film carries the same level of contrast as the ISO 200 and 400 stocks but with slightly softer yet vivid colors.
Conclusion
Overall Candido has done a great job of adding more variety to the already dwindling selection of 35mm color negative film stocks. The ISO 400 and 800 film stocks make for great alternatives to Kodak and Cinestills respective 400 and 800 film stocks and provide similar looks and characteristics for a lower price. I found the ISO 200 to be the more fun and unique to shoot with. The subtle change to a tungsten low speed film made me pay a bit more attention to my environment and how the film would react in certain light conditions. These film stocks are reminiscent of late 90’/early 2000’s movies like “Fight Club”, “Ocean’s 11”, or “Amélie” that prove to have bright vivid colors, great contrast, and are versatile for any occasion.
