The Grateful Dead by Jim Marshall / An Evening of Photos, Stories and Music – Event Recap

On September 18th, 2025, we were honored to host the opening reception and book launch for The Grateful Dead by Jim Marshall, published by Chronicle Books.

This landmark volume presents more than 200 photographs documenting the Grateful Dead’s formative years from 1966 to 1977 through the lens of legendary photographer Jim Marshall. Curated by Amelia Davis and David Gans, the book offers an unprecedented visual journey into one of the most influential eras in American music history.

To mark the occasion, we were joined by David Gans, a veteran Deadhead, music historian, and musician who performed live in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s founding and enduring legacy. Guests also had the opportunity to hear moving reflections from Amelia Davis of Jim Marshall Photography, contributing essayist Dan Sullivan, and David Gans, each sharing personal stories about Jim Marshall and the band. Adding to the celebration, Yellow Rose Distilling provided a special tasting of Jim Marshall’s limited-edition whiskey, raising a toast to the legendary photographer’s lasting impact

The Grateful Dead by Jim Marshall is now available in store at Leica Store San Francisco, with a limited selection of collector prints offered through Jim Marshall Photography. Please contact the gallery for details.
