On March 26, 2026, Fujifilm partnered with Camera West San Francisco to help us celebrate our grand opening, an energizing start that set the tone for everything we hope to build in this space. As part of the opening day festivities, we hosted two demos and photowalks, inviting our community to step directly into the tools and experience them in motion.
The Idea
At Camera West, we’ve always believed cameras are meant to be used, not just admired. There’s something essential about taking tools out of the case and into the world, letting them respond to light, movement, and the unplanned moment. Partnering with Fujifilm let us do exactly that: create a space where curiosity leads, and where photographers of every level can explore new systems in a hands-on, intuitive way.

The Day
Guided by Dan Leto, Barney Tong, and Tommy Spencer, participants were introduced to Fujifilm’s latest GFX system, the compact and playful X-Half, and everything in between. Each brought their own perspective and energy, creating an atmosphere that felt both educational and inviting.
We began in the morning over coffee and pastries as the first group explored the GFX lineup. There was a quiet excitement building, conversations around image quality, ergonomics, and what this kind of camera makes possible. That energy carried outward into Union Square, where, cameras in hand, participants set off to put the system to work in real time. The resulting images captured not only the capabilities of the cameras, but the rhythm of the morning itself. Select photographs from this walk were contributed by Latiece Brown and Alex Slavin.
The afternoon shifted into a more relaxed, exploratory pace with the X-Half photowalk. Led by Tommy and Barney, a smaller group moved through the vibrant streets of Chinatown, embracing the camera’s portability and charm. The walk unfolded through layered textures, color, and candid moments, an ideal setting for a camera designed to encourage play and experimentation. Images from this session were captured by members of the Camera West SF team, including Norm and Maggie, alongside Latiece, our enthusiastic double attendee of the day.
The Result
More than anything, the day was a reflection of what we hope Camera West San Francisco can be: a place where photographic community, craft, and curiosity intersect. From first impressions of new tools to shared moments out in the city, it was a reminder that photography is as much about connection as it is about the final image.
We’re incredibly grateful to Fujifilm for their support, and to everyone who joined us to make our first day something memorable.
We’re just getting started, and we’re excited for what’s ahead.
