Hasselblad has announced a brand new XCD 75mm f3.4 P lens for their X-Mount series of medium format mirrorless cameras. The new XCD 75mm f3.4 P follows Hasselblad’s philosophy for their P line of lenses, creating a smaller, more compact pancake-style lens for photographers looking to the best image quality in the most compact of lenses. This new lens is lightweight and compact enough to carry anywhere—a pleasant yet surprising feat for a 75mm medium format lens. In many ways, Hasselblad has reinvented the classic 80mm f2.8 Planar lens from days past. They’ve adapted this iconic compact, medium focal length, once used in V and H series cameras, for the X series, enhancing it with modern optics and features.
I took the lens out for testing, and it yielded some surprising results. Due to its small size, it was incredibly easy to carry around on the camera body without getting in my way. The lens was surprisingly sharp for its size and paired perfectly with the 100-megapixel sensor on the X2D. Finally, the bokeh on this lens is truly amazing. When shooting wide open, the portraits produced have remarkable separation, especially considering its f3.4 aperture.
